What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus) is a medicine used for weight loss in specific patients, and to lower blood sugar levels>

It is a GLP-1 agonist and works by increasing insulin release, lowering the amount of glucagon released, delaying gastric emptying, and reducing appetite.

GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that plays a role in your appetite and digestion.

Incretins are hormones released by your small intestine and are sent out by your body after you have eaten a meal to help lower your blood sugar by triggering insulin and blocking other sources of sugar.

It also slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, called gastric emptying. The result of these actions, cause you to feel full - lowering your appetite and causing you to lose weight.

Semaglutide dosing information

Semaglutide is injected under the skin, once per week at any time of the day, with or without food.

The injection is given on the same day each week.

If you choose a different weekly injection day, start your new schedule after at least 2 days have passed since the last injection you gave.

Blood sugar can be affected by stress, illness, surgery, exercise, alcohol use, or skipping meals.
